Homemade Irish Cottage Pie Recipe

This Classic Homemade Cottage Pie Recipe is sure to become a family favourite, bringing warmth and comfort to your table with every bite. Serves four people.

Ingredients

  • 450g quality beef mince from your local butcher
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 2 carrots, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 240ml beef stock
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp dried thyme
  • 1 tsp dried rosemary
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 150g frozen peas (optional)
  • 900g potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
  • 60ml milk
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 50g grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Steps

  1. Preheat your oven to 200°C.
  2. In a large frying pan, heat a little oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion, minced garlic, and diced carrots. Cook for about 7-8 minutes. Increase the heat and add the beef mince. Cook until browned.
  3. Stir in the tomato paste, beef stock, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, and rosemary. Cook for a couple of minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Reduce the heat and let the mixture simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens. Remove from heat.
  4. Place the potatoes in a pot of salted water. Bring to a boil and cook until tender, about 15 minutes. Drain the potatoes, add the milk and butter, then mash until smooth and creamy. Season to taste.
  5. Transfer the meat filling to a large baking dish, spreading it out evenly. Spoon the mashed potatoes over the meat filling, use a fork to create a decorative pattern on top. Sprinkle the grated cheddar cheese on top (if using).
  6. Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is bubbling around the edges. Allow the cottage pie to rest for a few minutes before serving. Enjoy!
